The following message is from Cheryl Okubo.

I’d like to invite you to join a cooking class (taught in English and Japanese) at my dear old friend’s cooking school in Tsuchiura. It is held on Saturday afternoons, from 3 – 5:30 pm. The teachers are very professional and extremely friendly, giving the class a wonderful atmosphere despite the old building. It has been in operation for over 40 years and they have over 10,000 delicious recipes! There is an initial fee of 10,000 yen, plus you have to purchase a cutting knife and leave it in the kitchen, but the monthly fee is very reasonable compared to other cooking schools, at just 12,000 per month. The cooking consists not only of Japanese foods but also Italian, Chinese, French and ethnic dishes. Everyone enjoys eating the food together at the end of the class, becoming quick friends. If you’re interested, call Teruko at Tsuchiura Ryori Kyoushitsu 029-821-2395 or 029-822-2253. The latter number is also a fax. Their homepage is in Japanese at http://www.tsuchiura-ryori.com. Enjoy!

The International Women’s Network is a group of women who enjoy chatting with other women from all over the world. We exchange information about the local community while eating a variety of homemade (and store-bought) foods. Some of our members are foreign and some are Japanese. We meet once a month.

Please bring one dish of food (enough for eight or ten people to get a taste of the dish) and a big smile!

Newcomers are always welcome! Take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the international city of Tsukuba with us!

Date: Thursday, August 27, 2009
Time: 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Location: Vivian’s House (Contact us for details.)
Host: Vivian

Because the potluck is being hosted at someone’s house instead of a public facility this month, we would like to ask you to contact us if you are coming.

Vivian will provide some plates, cups, chopsticks, napkins, Japanese shochu if you want to have some, and teas like mugi-cha, o-cha.

The Fifth Annual IWN Oscar Potluck will be held this month.

Date: Monday, February 23, 2009
Time: 6:00pm-9:00pm
Location: Ninomiya House
Host: Toshie

NEWCOMERS VERY WELCOME. This is a perfect chance for women to get to know other women in Tsukuba. Don’t miss out!

Contact us if you need directions or instructions on how to enter the building.

I recently found out about a woman in Tokyo who has a company that helps people take care of their elderly parents overseas, so I thought I would post some information on the IWN site for future reference.

Marcia Johnson launched Binocular Vision Advisors in 2003 to connect grown children caring for older parents from a distance with eldercare services they and their parents need. Based in Tokyo since 2007, she consults with English speaking expatriates caring for aging parents from overseas. Through programs for groups and consultation with individuals Binocular Vision helps expatriate families (regardless of nationality) cope with long distance caregiving and supports corporate productivity by helping expatriate workers address parent care challenges. Expatriates, whose parents live in Canada or the USA, can engage Binocular Vision to select qualified geriatric care manager candidates their near parents.

You can read more about Marcia and her company on TsukuBlog.

For more information, please get in touch with Marcia through her company’s website.
